Invasive Plant Management

A sunlit forest with mature trees and a ground cover of dry leaves.

There are a variety of invasive plants found on the property. These include glossy buckthorn, Asiatic bittersweet, honeysuckle, Japanese knotweed, garlic mustard, and common reed. The VT Land Trust in partnership with the CISMA have been working to manage and remove these species for the past 7 years.

Management Overview
2015Mechanical control of glossy buckthorn, Asiatic bittersweet and honeysuckle in open areas, followed by a chemical application along the edges of those areas.
2016Experimental control of barberry using flame weeding.
2020Mechanical control using brush saw in those same areas that were treated in 2015. We worked to avoid native species. Set up knotweed experimental plot and deer enclosure.
2021Finished mechanical control in those areas using brush saw and brush mower and had a chemical application done on the rest of the property with the exception of the phragmites that is growing into the Rt. 9 right of way.
2022 and 2023Follow-up treatments in all areas accompanied by strategic planting of native shrubs to jump start restoration.
